Behavioral Health
Our behavioral science curriculum is woven into all of our rotations and experiences. It is highlighted on a recurring basis in our longitudinal didactics, led by our faculty clinical psychologist. Core didactic sessions draw on a biopsychosocial perspective to explore the diagnosis, conceptualization, and treatment of common behavioral health concerns. Regular Balint sessions are also incorporated into the didactic schedule, providing residents with an opportunity to reflect together on the depth of emotions that accompany complex patient care experiences.
In addition to our longitudinal didactics, the second and third year of training also include block rotations focused on behavioral health and practice management. Residents participate in these blocks together as an entire class. Time is spent in a combination of seminar-style didactic sessions, collaborative projects, group reflection and Balint time, and shadowing and co-visits with behavioral health providers.
Throughout their training, residents also receive one-on-one direct coaching from our faculty psychologist to enhance their therapeutic and motivational interviewing skills and comfort responding to behavioral health concerns. First- and third-year residents are coached through direct observation at their clinic site, and second-year residents participate in an in-depth film review process during their addiction medicine rotation.
